Advocating for Seniors that are struggling to live and are taking out Payday loans, many of whom are living on fixed incomes, are now the largest group of payday loan borrowers in California. 老年人 62 and older took out more payday loans than any other age group in 2016. 将近 2.7 million loans, a nearly three-fold increase from the previous year. 一 2017 AARP study of California adults ages 36 到 70 shows that seniors aren’t the only ones finding it tough to live in California. One in five say they would not be able to pay an emergency expense of $1,000 以上. Their major concerns related to saving for retirement include having no money left after paying bills, housing expenses, paying for their children’s education, paying for health insurance and having significant debt to pay off. California state officials have tried to strengthen retirement security through a program to enroll private-sector workers, who are not currently enrolled, into a retirement account. The Secure Choice program requires employers with five or more employees to make the program available to their workers. But the program is under attack by President Trump and the Republican Congress. More than one-fifth of retirees rely on Social Security for 90% of their income. Social Security provides more than half of the income for 62% of retirees.
