Julian Bond, the civil rights icon and former NAACP chairman who died after a brief illness, was remembered Sunday as a hero who helped lead a generation against racism. Era 75.
Bond, who brought the NAACP back to credibility during his longtime chairmanship and who was the first black American nominated as vice president, died Saturday night in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., the Southern Poverty Law Center said Sunday.
He first came on the national scene in the 1960s as a student activist.
