Donald Ware

Donald Russell Ware, M.D. was born in Los Angeles, California. He is the child of parents who migrated from Texas to California in pursuit of a better life. His mother was a successful career woman in the 1940’s, working and struggling with a very difficult pregnancy to term all at the same time. He was her first and only child at age 38. She bled almost the entire pregnancy and required experimental intensive care in the Los Angeles County Hospital. His father was an educator and labor leader. Many prayers, excellent medical care and visits from family members and friends caused her to have an excellent delivery. She delivered her only child during the Thanksgiving season. Due to circumstances, he was raised by his mother to attend the Los Angeles public schools where many believed that there was little hope of success for a person. He did excel in Academics and Leadership. He went on to 3 years studying in the University of Redlands and then entered the University of California, San Francisco Medical School and the Berkeley School of Public Health, where he earned a simultaneous M.D. and Masters of Public Health degree. He then moved to the Bronx where he trained in Internal Medicine; moved to Bethesda, Maryland where he was the Medical Officer of the Country’s very successful High Blood Pressure Education Program. Later, he moved to Cambridge, MA. to be a part of the Harvard University Health Policy Program. He had to move back to California because of his mother’s illness and went on to become a Fellow at Kaiser Foundation Hospital, Los Angeles specializing in the area of Cardiology. He is currently in private practice today.
