Dedicated Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) elementary teacher and civil rights advocate Erika Jones is serving her second three-year term on the Board, which expires June 25, 2021. She represents members of United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA).

She has taught for 14 years teaching kindergarten through 5th grade. Within that time, she has been part of multiple school plan writing teams, is a national professional development trainer specializing in classroom management, culturally responsive teaching, racial equity and supporting school communities.

Her UTLA union experience includes serving as the West Area chair, board of directors, Cámara de los Representantes, Political Action Council of Educators (PACE), and as a site rep. She also served on the UTLA bargaining team during the 2019 Strike and co-chairs UTLA’s Racial Justice Taskforce collaborating with community organizations, estudiantes, parents and educators.

She served as a delegate to the CTA State Council of Education for five years and chaired the Council’s Civil Rights in Education Committee. Jones also served as an alternate to the NEA Board and on the CTA Long-Term Strategic Planning Workgroup that devised a blueprint for CTA’s future- centered around goals of organizing, advocacy, community engagement and social justice.

Born in New York and raised in Kentucky, Jones has lived in California since 1991. Prior to becoming a teacher, she worked in public relations and coordinated a countywide school assembly program focused on educating children about being environmentally conscious.

Jones was drawn to the classroom by her dedication to social justice and racial equity. She says she has not looked back since and truly believes educators are changing the world for the better.

“We have a long road ahead of us but working together and with our communities, we will get there for the sake of our students and their future.”

She holds a Bachelor’s in International Business from Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles, and earned her teaching credential and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from California State University, Northridge. She also holds a credential in Administration. She has completed the Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education Program: Leadership, Organizing and Action – Leading Change and was a member of Governor Gavin Newsom’s taskforce on Charter Schools
