Family of Long Beach man killed in park restroom demands justice, believes shooting was a hate crime

Loved ones of a 57-year-old man gunned down in a restroom at Long Beach’s Pan American Park over the weekend are demanding justice and pleading for tips leading to his killer.

Dozens of friends and family members gathered at the Lakewood Village park for a vigil Monday evening, where they remembered Fredrick Taft as a loving grandfather whose life was senselessly cut short in what they say was a racially motivated hate crime. Taft was black and police say the suspect is white. Some of the mourners had been at a family reunion at the park on Saturday when Taft was shot in the upper torso at about 4:30 pm.
