Herb Wesson, Yo-Yo, & Michael Lawson (Obama Blvd Naming Ceremony & Street Festival)

Herb J. Wesson, Jr. (reg) has served as the President of the Los Angeles City Council since November 2011 and has represented Council District 10 sedert 2005. Wesson is the first African American to hold the position of Council President in the city’s history and has been re-elected three times to lead the city’s legislative body. During his tenure as Council President, Wesson has presided over monumental policy initiatives making Los Angeles a better place to live, work and raise a family. Not only have local policy initiatives —which include raising the minimum wage, pension reform and consolidating city elections to increase voter turnout— positively affected local residents, but in many cases, the city’s actions have spurred state and national response and served as a model for similar policies.

Wesson chairs several committees including the Rules, Verkiesings, Intergovernmental Relations, and Neighborhoods (REIRN) Committee, Board of Referred Powers and the Ad Hoc Committee on the 2024 Summer Olympics. He is the Vice Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Comprehensive Job Creation. As chair of REIRN, Wesson has facilitated the empowerment of Neighborhood Councils while finding new and innovative ways to engage the public and promote civic engagement.

Michael Lawson (Reg) In 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Lawson to serve as the U.S. Representative to the 36-member Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a UN specialized agency. Daarbenewens, he was a member of the Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) for Los Angeles World Airports from 2005-2011 and as president of the BOAC from 2008-2011. Lawson was a partner at the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP in their New York and Los Angeles offices until he retired in 2011. He was also recognized by Chambers USA as one of the nation’s “Leading Lawyers for Business.”

Lawson received his Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School in 1978 and BA in Political Science and Economics from Loyola Marymount University in 1975. Daarbenewens, Lawson has served on a number of charitable educational administrative boards and committees over the years.
