Herb J. Wesson, Jr. (droit) has served as the President of the Los Angeles City Council since November 2011 and has represented Council District 10 depuis 2005. Wesson is the first African American to hold the position of Council President in the city’s history and has been re-elected three times to lead the city’s legislative body. During his tenure as Council President, Wesson has presided over monumental policy initiatives making Los Angeles a better place to live, work and raise a family. Not only have local policy initiatives —which include raising the minimum wage, pension reform and consolidating city elections to increase voter turnout— positively affected local residents, but in many cases, the city’s actions have spurred state and national response and served as a model for similar policies.

Wesson chairs several committees including the Rules, Élections, Intergovernmental Relations, and Neighborhoods (REIRN) Committee, Board of Referred Powers and the Ad Hoc Committee on the 2024 Summer Olympics. He is the Vice Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Comprehensive Job Creation. As chair of REIRN, Wesson has facilitated the empowerment of Neighborhood Councils while finding new and innovative ways to engage the public and promote civic engagement.

Yo-yo (middle) (born Yolanda Whittaker) has been among the most sophisticated and unpredictable female MCs around. She doesn’t take an overtly feminist tack but urges young women to show sexual restraint and use their minds as well as their bodies. Her introduction to the hip-hop game came with an appearance on the 1990 Ice Cube track “C'est un monde d'homme” (off his debut solo album, “Most Wanted de AmeriKKKa”). It wasn’t until the next year, when East West America/Atlantic Records issued her first single, “You Can’t Play with My Yo-Yo” (#1/#36 – R&B/Hot 100) that she gained critical acclaim and success. The following singles “Stompin in the ’90s” (#2 – hip-hop), “Ain’t Nobody Better” (#4/#30 – R&B/Hot 100) et “Fille, Don’t be No Fool” helped propel the album “Make Way pour le filon” toward cracking the Billboard Top 100 (#74/#5 R&B) graphique. Pendant ce temps, she added her first screen credit in the Oscar-nominated film Boyz n the Hood (1991) with a small cameo.

YoYo’s School of Hip Hop will serve youth ages, 7-18, who are interested in developing and crafting their skills through the arts and academics of hip hop. A recent study from the University of California found that music trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Par exemple, second graders who were given music lessons scored 27% higher on proportional math and fractions tests than children who received no special instruction. Research indicates that musical training permanently wires a young mind for enhanced performance. YoYo’s School of Hip Hop provides a challenging program that offers a positive outlet and a safe haven for the children in the community.

Michael Lawson (Droit) Dans 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Lawson to serve as the U.S. Representative to the 36-member Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a UN specialized agency. En outre, he was a member of the Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) for Los Angeles World Airports from 2005-2011 and as president of the BOAC from 2008-2011. Lawson was a partner at the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP in their New York and Los Angeles offices until he retired in 2011. He was also recognized by Chambers USA as one of the nation’s “Leading Lawyers for Business.”

Lawson received his Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School in 1978 and BA in Political Science and Economics from Loyola Marymount University in 1975. En outre, Lawson has served on a number of charitable educational administrative boards and committees over the years.
