James Fugate, a native of Detroit, opened Eso Won Books in the Crenshaw District in 1989. When he noticed
the absence of African American authors carried by a national retailer. Eso Won Books, located in iconic
Leimert Park, has hosted events for countless luminary authors including two former US presidents: Barack
Obama before he was president, and Bill Clinton after he held office.
