President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor Ron Herrera has been a Union member for over 41 years. His commitment to the Labor Movement was taught to him by his father, who was a longtime member of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 13 and worked the Ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Oakland. Ron’s father taught him a deep respect for worker rights, social justice, and the critical role of Labor Unions in advancing these interests.
In the early 1900s, the Herrera family lived in Clifton, Arizona where Ron’s family worked brutally tough jobs in the local Copper mines. Latino miners were routinely abused and were paid less than half the wages of other copper miners. Labor unrest ensued as the Herrera family and other Latino families suffering the same exploitation fought for equal pay and equal rights. These labor history lessons taught to Ron by his father resonated with Ron and is one of the reasons Ron has a deep passion and commitment in his fight for workers.
Ron started his Union career in 1975 when he accepted a job with United Parcel Service as a package car driver. Ron was one of a handful of Latino drivers employed by UPS at the time. Motivated by the teachings and legacy of his Father, Ron quickly became active in his Union.
During his years as a rank and file Teamster member, Ron represented his fellow members as a UPS Shop Steward. In 2000, Ron was hired as a Teamsters Local 396 Business Representative, and in 2001 he became the President of Local 396. In 2003, Ron was elected in a landslide to the Principal Officer position as Secretary-Treasurer of Local 396.
Ron was subsequently elected as a Trustee on the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Executive Board in 2011. In 2015, Ron was promoted from his Trustee position when he was appointed by International Brotherhood of Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa to the position of International Brotherhood of Teamsters Western Region Vice President on the General Executive Board.
Ron also serves as the International Director of the 32,000 member Teamster Solid Waste and Recycling Division. Ron is also the Chairman of the UPS/Teamsters Article 43 National Committee, Executive Assistant to the Teamsters National Hispanic Caucus, and Recording Secretary of Teamsters Joint Council 42. Currently, Ron serves the Los Angeles Labor Community as a Vice President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.
Ron is dedicated to bettering the lives of workers through organizing. He has led many successful organizing campaigns that have enabled workers in the Solid Waste, Logistics and Graphic industries to become Union members. Ron Herrera leads a partnership with the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy(LAANE), the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the Los Angeles and Orange County Federations of Labor and religious and community groups. This coalition has enabled thousands of workers throughout Los Angeles and Southern California to become members of the Teamsters Union.
Ron looks forward to continuing his fight against income inequality and corporate greed as a leader in the battle to improve the lives of working families.
