Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager (D-Los Angeles) represents the 54th Assembly District, encompassing Baldwin Hills, the Crenshaw community, all of Culver City, Ladera Heights, Parque Leimert, Mar Vista, Mid-City Los Angeles, Palms, Pico-Union, Westwood and Windsor Hills.
En 2019, Kamlager guided six of her eight bills to the Governor’s desk, all of which were signed into law. Most notable among them were Assembly Bill 241 and Assembly Bill 242, incorporating implicit bias training into continued education for healthcare professionals, abogados, and judges, respectivamente. Kamlager recognizes that injustice, in the form of implicit bias, is inherent in our health and judicial systems and that the decisions made by healthcare and judicial professionals have the power to alter lives significantly. Both bills were victories in the pursuit of reducing disparities in California’s healthcare and judicial systems.
As Chair of the Select Committee on Incarcerated Women, Kamlager is focused on reviewing and reforming policies to support the health, dignity, and rehabilitation of women in prison.
Kamlager also serves on the Penal Code Revision Committee. The Committee, directed by Governor Gavin Newsom, studies and recommends ways to simplify and rationalize the substance and procedure of criminal law in California. She also sits on the Assembly Public Safety Committee.
Born and raised in Chicago, Kamlager moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in political science and joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She earned her Master’s degree in arts management and public policy from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Kamlager lives in View Park with her husband, Austin Dove, her 2 step-children, and their dog, Kush, where she enjoys staying home and washing her hands.
